CHAPTER 28

As I continued driving for town, I tried calling Melvin’s phone again. It rang this time and I grew excited, but it was short-lived. He didn’t answer. I scowled. Why had it finally started ringing? Had he run into trouble and turned it on to call for help? If so, why hadn’t he called out? And why wasn’t he answering?

I called Amy. “Did you hear from Melvin?”

“No, but Takecia and I have found a lot of individuals who might want you dead.” She took a breath. “You’ve pissed off a lot of people.”

“Haven’t we all?”

There was a long pause. “Clint, have you been able to verify they still have Gracie?”

“What do you mean?”

“Have you asked for proof of life?”

I swallowed hard. Sure, the thoughts had been swimming around in my head—wondering if she was still alive—but the prospect of losing her sounded too dreadful to say out loud. “I…I did ask to speak with Gracie during one of the calls, but the caller refused to put her on.” I squeezed my fist and my knuckles cracked, punctuating my angry disposition. “He said he’d start mailing me her body parts if I didn’t do what he told me to do. I want to call his bluff, but I just can’t gamble with her life. I can’t bring myself to do it.”

“That’s interesting.”

“What?” I asked, curiosity getting the better of me. “What’s so interesting about it?”

“If Gracie was with him, why not let you hear her voice?” she asked. “It’s a simple request. You gain no advantage by hearing your daughter’s voice. In fact, doing so would benefit him. It would encourage you to keep following his orders.”

A cold chill came over me and I almost passed out. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying? Do you think she’s gone?”

I think she heard the dread in my voice, because she hurriedly apologized. “Oh, no, I’m so sorry! That’s not what I meant. No, I’m saying he took her someplace safe. He can’t go running around in a boat with a baby. That would attract too much attention. I think he took her to a safe house somewhere, so he would be free to roam around and do whatever it is he’s doing. This is why he couldn’t put her on the phone.”

My heart started beating again as I considered this possibility. I might’ve come to that conclusion had I been thinking clearly, but I’d been running on pure fear and adrenalin since finding Susan in the shells last night.

“This safe house, do you think it’s out on the water or here on land?”

“I have no clue, Clint.” She paused, and I could almost see her chewing on her lower lip. “If I were a betting woman, I’d say he wanted to get rid of her as soon as possible to reduce the risk of being caught with her in his custody, so my money is on a camp out on the water.”

“Either way, if you’re right, then someone has to be watching her,” I said.
